There are bigger affronts to personal freedom than a serialized metal plaque... But I don’t think freedom of expression is the issie .

The issue is that the DMV spends extra time to vet those plates, which makes the process slower for everyone . It might make the state money but I cannot imagine how much they spend enforcing it. Plus, I doubt Saskatchewan’s DMV is happy now, as they appeared as the bad guys on national TV for a process they do not have the control over.

Now imagine being a professional angry person , and you see ‘assman’ written on a license plate... Your brain makes you go nuts, so you stop the guy in the truck and you sue him for exposing your child to foul language... but then the owner says the state lets him do it... So then you sue the state for Assman and you ban everything.

You might laugh, but it actually happened .

I very seriously doubt this guy was so thick that he didn’t foresee this being a problem, which leads me to believe he’s trying to prove a point, however:

Very very few people would have thought ASSMAN on his license plate was referring to his last name.

Whatever Saskatchewan’s equivalent of the DMV is could care less about what his car says, they just don’t want to be associated with possible vulgarity, which is more than fair.

The way he has now responded isn’t very clever. It just looks stupid. I’m with TAE... just ban personalized plates.
